'OBCs outscore general merit student

BANGALORE: The great OBC myth has been busted. The biggest concern of
the anti-reservation activists that introduction of castebased
reservations in higher education institutes would deteriorate the
quality of education has been debunked.

The final report of the Oversight Committee headed by M Veerappa Moily
to be submitted to PM Manmohan Singh will be backed by strong case
studies from southern states, including Karnataka, to establish how
OBC students have been consistently outscoring general category and
SC/ST students.

Sample this study on the performance of OBC students in Karnataka's
engineering colleges. The study pertained to the admission and
performance of four batches of students in Visvesvaraya Technological
University between 1998-2002 and 2001-2005.

While OBC students have a pass percentage of 93.01 to 97.4, general
merit students recorded just 66.09 to 94.77 from the 1998-2000 batch
to 2001-2005 batch.

The percentage of first class with distinction among OBC students was
between 37.7 and 42.38,while among SC/ST students it was between 9.32
and 11.90 in the same period.

An exclusive study by Bangalore University former vice-chancellor N R
Shetty at the behest of the Oversight Committee has concluded that
there has been no reduction or loss of performance due to introduction
of OBC candidates.

The study has only proved that given a chance, the so-called Backward
Classes can also perform. "In fact, OBC students have done better than
general category and SC/ST students. With the increasing
representation for the backward classes their performance may be
expected to improve," Shetty told The Times of India.

The study shows engineering colleges have been able to fill up the OBC
quota more easily than the SC/ST category. Against 32% reservation for
OBC students in Karnataka, the enrolment has been in the range of
21.17% to 29.69%, while intake of SC/ST students has been a paltry
5.35% to 6.66% against the recommended 18%.

"We don't want to stop just with engineering students. Shortly we will
study the performance of OBC students in medical and dental courses as
well. The aspect of excellence in terms of ranks in the Common
Entrance Test obtained by the OBC students will be explored," Shetty
added.

Moily committee has commissioned similar studies in Andhra Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which have been implementing reservation
policies favouring OBCs.

You have talked a lot of "US Affirmative Action Program". Do you understand the difference between the Indian Quota System and the US "Affirmative Action"? I guess not, why? because you write yourself as "Backwardpeple". What you think, so shall you become.

Please read the distinction

MAJOR DISTINCTIONS FROM INDIAN QUOTA SYSTEM
1. NO FIXED QUOTAS- HIRING GOALS INSTEAD
Instead of fixed Quotas, the US department of labor assigns “goals” to Organization falling under certain legislations and the concerned institutions/ Corporations, develop a “written policy & program” with regards to Affirmative Action Plan implementation and bringing more of minorities and women in their work force.
2. SAME CRITERION FOR SELECTING CANDIDATES- read the following
Does affirmative action mean that we are applying different standards for white males than for women and minorities?

Affirmative action was never meant to encourage the hiring of any candidate who is less than qualified. One standard should be applied to all candidates. Assuming that there is a double standard implies that minorities and women are less qualified, generally, than white males. It is important that job-related criteria be used during the search and screen process and that all candidates be screened according to those criteria.

3. THE PROGRAMS ARE NOT “MANDATORY” FOR ALL INSTITUTIONS
The Program is not "must" for all Organization. More details are available online on US Department of Labor website.

4. NOT PROPORTIONAL TO THE POPULATION OF “SPECIAL GROUPS”
The affirmative action programs are “NOT PROPORTIONAL” to the population of the Special groups like Women and Minority- though it is the goal that all protected groups should have their representation in proportion to their given population.

QUESTIONS FOR THE POLITICIANS & GOVERNMENT?
-WHEN ONLY 2% DALITS REACH TILL GRADUCATION, WHY WE ARE FOCUSING ON ENSURING PROPORTIONAL RESERVATION INSTEAD OF IMPROVING UPON BASIC SCHOOLING FOR POOR?
- WHY SPECIAL “CRITERION” FOR SELECING CANDIDATES WHERE AS WE KNOW THAT “DALITS & OBC” STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE SAME LEVEL OF IQ AS GENERAL CANDIDATES- ARE WE SAYING THAT DALITS AND OBC ARE NOT AS COMPETENT AS THE GENERAL POPULATION?
-WHAT WAS THE OBJECTIVE OF RESERVATION IN THE FIRST PLACE? EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL? SOCIAL JUSTICE (MEANING WHAT)?
-WHAT IS OUR PROGRESS AFTER 6 DECADES OF RESERVATION AND SINCE WE KNOW THAT THE PROGRAM HAS ACHIEVED ONLY “LIMITED SUCCESS”- WHO IS RESPONSILBLE?
AFTER 6 DECADES OF QUOTA SYSTEM
1. HAVE WE BEEN ABLE TO BREAK AWAY THE CAST SYSTEM?
2. PROVIDE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES TO ALL DESERVING CANDIDATES?
3. HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GRADUATE EVEN 50% OF THE DALIT POPULATION?
4. AND IF THE ANSWER IS NO, WHY NOT SCRAP RESERVATION PROGRAM AND TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT LIKE COMMON SELECTION CRITERION FOR ALL CANDIDATES, HIRING GOALS FOR SC/ST/OBC CANDIDATES, MORE SPENDING ON PUBLIC EDUCAITON SYSTEM, MORE TRAINING, MORE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE POOR?
DALIT AND OBC ARE AS COMPETENT AS ANY GENERAL CANDIDATE FROM ANY COMMUNITY- THEY DO NOT NEED A “RESERVATION TAG” BUT EQUATL OPPORTUNITIES, GOOD QUALITY SCHOOLS AND MORE SCHOLARSHIPS.
A QUOTA BASED SYSTEM IS A SYMBOL OF GOVERNMENT’S INABILITY TO PROVIDE QUALITY SCHOOL EDUCATION TO POOR AND A MOCKERY OF THE TERM “SOCIAL JUSTICE”.

but the empty seats, not taken by the SC/STs will not go to general category students who put in all their hard work, get 94.8% and not 95% unlike ur dropout pals, who, even when given the opportunity to enter with 70% dont want to. i am not insulting, just making an observation, of course all classes have good students, but if there r some reserved seats unfilled, whats the fault in opening them up? rather than denying the seats to deserving students, who have ACTUALLY earned, with 90% above rather than those with just 70% who get in and get out, scott-free?

WHEN IT COMES TO RESERVATIONS PMK, DMK AND AIADMK PREFER HINDI OVER TAMIL

Pro reservationationists ironically favour Muslims who only speak Hindi at home or Nayudus and Reddys who speak only Telugu at home. At the same time they treat Tamil-speaking Brahmins and Chettiars as foreign invaders by excluding them . They also claim to fight for the Tamil cause….by dividing Tamil society!!? PMK, DMK, ADMK etc reject creamy layer, support the cruel 2-tumbler system of Southern Tamil Nadu and now demand extended reservation. PMK leader will go Delhi, Hyderabad and Bombay to promote reservation rather than setting up Tamil learning centers in those places. This shows that Tamil Nadu policitians don’t mind loosing their self respect and prefer to worship their Hindi masters than to work for an integrated Tamil society. Incidently the PMK health minister has made Hindi compulsory for medicine, the the DMK surface transport minister has made Hindi compulsory on national roads even in Tamil Nadu.
